EMILY’S SURPRISE 30TH BIRTHDAY TEA PARTY

Ooh I do love surprises! And I love planning surprises even more! For a few weeks I’ve been harbouring the secret that some of our best gal pals was heading down to my place to surprise Em with a tea party for her 30th Birthday! The plan was all set in motion, Emily would think that she was coming over for us to create and photograph our DIYs for the week (but little did she know that I had already done them muhahaha) so when she walked through my front door she was greeted with loud screams of SURPISE!!!

She was of course very surprised and shocked to see me, Emily from Mermaid Gossip and Sofia and Elena from The Costa Sisters all crouching on the floor hiding behind the kitchen worktop! And I’m pretty sure that she shed a little tear when she turned around and saw that epic cat cake! We had to get a cat cake made because Emily loves cats so much! Oh and if you happen to be wondering about where that cute candy wreath is from, the DIY is coming to the blog next week! Yay!

The wonderful Oliver Bonas also supplied some insanely gorgeous tea party essentials like that marble cake stand, and the super pretty tea cups and saucers! We even had a matching tea pot too and let me tell ya…we drank a lot of tea! We spent the afternoon eating yummy cupcakes and sandwiches and munching on other sweet treats too!

First things first, I just want to say that in no way could we ever be as good at decorating cakes as the epic Katherine Sabbath is, but since it’s my birthday today we thought we would give it a dam good go! These were the colourful results and if anything it’s a cake that Katy Perry herself would be proud of! If you’d like to have a go at making your own inspired cake then here’s how you can do it….

YOU WILL NEED:

A four tier cake in whatever flavour you like with a crumb coat. (you can learn how to crumb coat here) // 500g butter // 1k icing sugar // Splash of milk // food colouring (we chose pink and blue but the blue turned out green!) // 200g chopped white chocolate // 200ml double cream // Sprinkles, sweets and lollipops for decoration //

STEP 1:

The first thing you need to do is whip up your buttercream! So whisk together your butter (softened is easer) with your icing sugar until light and fluffy then gradually add in your food colouring until you’re happy with the colour.

STEP 2:

Using a knife or a spatula, apply your buttercream to the entire of your cake making it as smooth as possible. We did the sides first then finished off on the top of the cake. Once you’re done pop your cake in the fridge for an hour.

Food DIY: How To Make A Chocolate Birthday Cake

DIY Chocolate Birthday CakeThis is literally the best chocolate cake you will ever eat. HANDS DOWN!! It just so happens to be a family tradition of ours to always have ‘Nan’s chocolate cake’ for any of our Birthdays and since IT’S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY (woop woop!!) I thought there was no better food DIY that I could share with you! I hope you feel special because I’m about to reveal the secret recipe…

You will need:

 2 x 8 Inch cake tin               4 Eggs                     8oz Margarine               3 Tbsp Coco Powder    8oz Self Raising Flower

 8oz Caster Sugar                    2 Flakes                 1/2 tspn Baking Powder       Chocolate Buttons      8oz Icing Sugar

Baking Paper                           250g Butter
