As many of our readers will know, we are huge advocates of all things creative, bespoke and completely original. Today we have an absolute gem of a supplier for you, with all those qualities plus many many more. That family Shop are a small family run business that work closely together to create one of a kind items from natural materials. They selectively harvest wood from their own forest and shear the wool from their own flock of sheep for stuffing for their toys. That family shop have a goal to live with as gentle of a footstep upon our earth as is possible, to provide themselves and others with healthier and more natural options. Here is their story…
“Once upon a rainy fourth of July, in a crowed corner bar, a unique couple met. Little did anyone in the stuffy room suspect the couple chatting in the corner would go on to marry and create ‘that family.’
Today, some twenty six years later, that family is still rejoicing in their parent’s decision to strip off ties and kick off high heels and trade their life of Chicago concrete for a life of bending over the soil, caring for animals and raising us; namely, their nine children.
As ‘That Family’ we work together to maintain and operate a 50-acre homestead as naturally and simply as possible. Our goal is to stay close as a family by staying close to the land and coexisting as gently and respectfully as possible on her surface.
As much as possible, we strive to live simply and provide for ourselves. Our half acre garden, three milk cows, chickens and steers produce 75% of our food. Every year we spend a few weeks working together in our woods sustainably harvesting our firewood for winter’s heat. With growing improvement, we shear our small flock of sheep by hand each year and process their fiber into thick, warm, winter farm chore socks and gloves. Christmastime is a crazy fun couple of weeks each year, with the boys working together out in the workshop to make gifts for us girls and us girls working together round the sewing machine to craft the boy’s gifts in return. But of all the gifts and crafts that our hands have proudly produced over the years, nothing compares to the pride this family has in the four walls and roof that shelter us. In the summer of ’05 we undertook our biggest family project yet, building the natural cob home that we now comfortably inhabit.
The simplicity of our slow paced life allows for plenty of recreational time, in which we enjoy making loud music as a family band, filming goofy action movies with our brothers and riding our horses down to Lake Superior (five miles) and going swimming with them.
ThatFamilyShop.com came about as a result of folks asking about the natural toys and various handmade furnishings that decorate our handmade home. We feel good about supporting ourselves with natural materials and the work of our hands. Every product in our store has been born of a need or a request, whether it’s a toy pony for the toddler, a healing bar of soap or rustic wedding decor requested from us by natural-minded brides. When you order from us, rest assured; the wood in your jewelry box was a sustainably harvested tree that the boys hauled in from our forest and the soft squishy stuffing in your pony was hand clipped off the backs of our sheep and hand washed just for you! Feel good in the knowledge that every purchase from our shop is for betterment of family and the planet. We are a family that loves life!!”
