DIY TERRARIUM TABLE NUMBERS (WITH FREE PRINTABLES!)
Plants and flowers can make such a difference when it comes to your table decor, they really breath life into weddings and not to mention, look ever so pretty. Today we’re going to be sharing a fun and easy DIY that not only combines centre pieces with your table numbers but that also includes a free printable! We’ve designed a bunch of table numbers with a lovely gold ombre effect to nestle into your terrariums, let’s get started shall we?
YOU WILL NEED:
Terrariums (We got this one from Oliver Bonas) // Small pebbles/stones // Foliage // Flowers of your choice // Printable table numbers 1-6 // Printable table numbers 7-12 // Alternatively, if you’d prefer to have the table numbers larger (to display outside of the terrarium) then download them here //
STEP 1:
First of all we’re going to fill the bottom of the glass terrarium with some small pebbles, you can pick whatever matches your colour scheme best (I know you can get them in funky colours like bright pink online!), you can obviously add rocks, soil and sand to yours too if you wanted.

STEP 2:
Next we’re going to add in the foliage, I’ve used eucalyptus and ferns here and just cut them down to size to be able to fit inside the terrarium. If you want to add an extra pop of green then why not add in some succulents or cacti here too?
STEP 3:
Now it’s time to add in the flowers, again you can pick whichever types and colours and flowers compliment your theme or even choose ones that match your bouquet! I’ve gone with pink roses, chrysanthemum and gypsophila here.

STEP 4:
Finally it’s time to print off your table numbers onto white card, then simply cut them out and pop them inside the terrariums. Re-arrange the greenery slightly if you want to, sometimes it looks cute with a little foliage wrapping around the numbers or hanging down over top.
And that’s it! Once you’ve popped them on the tables we love the idea of adding a few extra succulents around them and pretty plant pots to complete the look!
Don’t forget we’ve got hundreds more printables right here! xx
More Tips and Ideas for Your DIY TERRARIUM TABLE NUMBERS
You’re planning your wedding, and every detail feels like a chance to show off your unique love story. From the moment your guests walk in, you want them to feel that magic, that immediate “wow.” I’ve seen countless couples pour their hearts into making their day truly special, and there’s one charming detail I keep coming back to: DIY terrarium table numbers.
I remember one couple, Sarah and Tom, who tied the knot in a beautifully restored barn. They were on a tight budget but had boundless creativity. As I scouted their reception space, I noticed these enchanting little worlds on each table. Each was a miniature terrarium, meticulously crafted, and nestled within its leafy embrace was a delicate, yet clearly visible, table number. It wasn’t just decor; it was a conversation starter, a tiny ecosystem of their love. That’s the kind of magic these DIY terrarium table numbers bring to the table – literally! They’re a truly enchanting and cost-effective way to infuse your reception with personalized charm, blending natural beauty with bespoke creativity. They offer a unique and memorable guide for your guests while adding an eco-chic touch to your decor.
What Makes DIY Terrarium Table Numbers So Special for Your Big Day?
You might be thinking, “Terrariums for a wedding centerpiece?” My answer is a resounding yes! This isn’t just about sticking a plant in a jar; it’s about injecting your personality into every corner of your celebration. The beauty of these DIY terrarium table numbers lies in their incredible versatility. Beyond just simple greenery, these little glass habitats are blank canvases for your imagination.
Think about it: you can choose specific plants that reflect your journey, perhaps resilient succulents or whimsical ferns. Layer in colored sand to match your wedding palette, add tiny figurines that tell a chapter of your story, or even weave in delicate fairy lights for an evening glow. It’s an opportunity to create mini-narratives at each table, inviting your guests into your world.
But here’s another secret weapon: their amazing double-duty potential. Unlike cut flowers that wilt, a well-made terrarium can thrive long after the last dance. This means your DIY terrarium table numbers can transform into thoughtful, sustainable wedding favors for your guests to take home, or become charming decor for your new home. Imagine your loved ones looking at that living piece of your wedding day months later – it’s a tangible, lasting memory. This not only reduces waste but also provides a truly unique keepsake that feels deeply personal and considerate.
So, is a DIY terrarium project right for your wedding style? If you’re dreaming of a bohemian vibe, a rustic country affair, a modern minimalist aesthetic, or even a whimsical enchanted garden theme, terrariums fit in perfectly. They offer a grounded, organic feel that you can dress up or down. Any DIY project requires time, of course. But when you compare that to the significant savings on elaborate floral centerpieces and the sheer joy of creating something so uniquely “you,” it’s often a clear winner.
Getting Started: The Essential Tools & Terrarium Types
Alright, aspiring terrarium artists, let’s get our hands dirty – in the best way possible! First, you’ll pick your vessels. This is where the fun really begins! You have options: geometric terrariums offer a modern, architectural feel; classic cloches or bell jars bring timeless elegance; and open or closed containers dictate the type of plants you’ll use. For table numbers, I often lean towards open vessels or those with easily removable tops, as it simplifies numbering and allows for better air circulation for certain plants.
Now, where do you find these beauties without blowing your budget? Don’t rush to the first fancy decor shop! My unexpected tip for sourcing affordable, unique vessels is to hit up thrift stores, antique shops, or even local flea markets. You’d be amazed at the hidden gems you can uncover – old glass lanterns, interesting jars, or unique glassware that can be repurposed. Online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace or local crafting groups can also be treasure troves for bulk buys. Sometimes, you find something truly one-of-a-kind that gives your table numbers an extra layer of character. Once you have them, a simple clean will prep them for their starring role.
Here’s your essential shopping list for the actual terrarium contents. Think of these as the building blocks of your miniature worlds:
- Terrarium Vessels: Your chosen glass containers.
- Pebbles/Gravel: For drainage at the bottom.
- Activated Charcoal: Crucial for keeping your terrarium fresh and preventing mold.
- Potting Mix: Specifically for terrariums or succulents; it needs to be well-draining.
- Moss: Sphagnum moss or sheet moss to separate layers and add beauty.
- Plants: Small, slow-growing varieties like succulents, air plants, small ferns, or mosses.
- Tools: Long tweezers, a small scoop or funnel, and a spray bottle for misting.
- Numbering Elements: Small acrylic numbers, sturdy cardstock tags, delicate wire numbers, or even custom decals for the glass.
- Decorative Elements (Optional but fun!): Small stones, crystals, mini animal figurines, polished glass, or tiny battery-operated fairy lights.
Remember, quality materials make a big difference in the longevity and vibrancy of your terrariums. Investing a little more in good soil and healthy plants will save you headaches down the line. What unique treasures will you unearth for your display?
Step-by-Step: Crafting Your Terrarium Table Number Masterpieces
Ready to get your hands a little dirty? Creating these mini-worlds is incredibly therapeutic and surprisingly straightforward. Here’s how we transform those empty vessels into living art:
First, the Prep Work. Start with meticulously clean glass vessels. Lay down a thin layer (about 1-2 inches, depending on vessel size) of your pebbles or gravel at the very bottom – this is your drainage layer. No one wants soggy roots! On top of that, add a thin layer of activated charcoal. This acts as a natural filter, absorbing odors and toxins, which is essential for healthy plant life. Finally, spread a generous layer (2-3 inches, depending on plant root size) of your specialized potting mix over the charcoal. This is where your green beauties will thrive.
Now for the Planting Perfection. Carefully remove your chosen plants from their nursery pots, gently shaking off excess soil. Using long tweezers or small tongs, delicately place your plants into the soil, arranging them aesthetically. Think about varying heights and textures to create visual interest. Once they’re in place, tuck a bit more soil around their roots to secure them. If you’re using moss, now’s the time to carefully place sheets or clumps of it on top of the soil, around your plants, for that lush, finished look. Give them a light misting of water to settle the soil – remember, less is often more with terrariums!
Next up: Adding the “Number.” This is where your table numbers truly come alive. You have so many creative avenues here! For a sleek, modern look, consider small, clear acrylic numbers on a stick that can be gently pushed into the soil. For something rustic, tiny wooden plaques with numbers etched or painted on them, wired to a small twig, can be charming. I’ve even seen couples use custom vinyl decals applied directly to the outside of the glass, a truly seamless integration. Whatever you choose, ensure it’s easily visible and complements the overall aesthetic of your terrarium.
Finally, infuse some Personal Touches. This is where you can truly make your terrariums sing. Maybe you add tiny polished river stones gathered from a meaningful place, or sparkling crystals that catch the light. A couple who loved fantasy novels once added miniature dragon figurines peeking out from behind a fern – it was adorable and totally them. Delicate, battery-operated fairy lights woven through the greenery can create a magical glow for evening receptions.
My expert insight here is all about prevention. The biggest terrarium pitfalls are overwatering and condensation. A little condensation is normal, but if your terrarium is constantly fogged up, it means too much moisture. Open the lid (if applicable) for a few hours, or if it’s an open terrarium, hold back on watering. A light mist every week or two is usually sufficient; succulents need even less. You want the soil to be slightly damp, not soggy. Regular checks ensure your living table numbers stay vibrant.
Consider creating one “test” terrarium a month or two before your wedding to get a feel for the process and monitor its health. This way, you’ll be a pro by the time you make the full batch!
Display & Logistics: Making Them Shine on Your Wedding Day
You’ve poured your heart into creating these mini-masterpieces, so let’s ensure they absolutely shine on your wedding day! The way you display your DIY terrarium table numbers can elevate your entire reception aesthetic.
How to Integrate Terrariums into Your Overall Table Decor? Think of your terrariums as the focal point, but not the only player. They pair beautifully with other elements to create a cohesive look:
- Lighting is key! Surround them with flickering votive candles or elegant pillar candles of varying heights. The soft glow will highlight the greenery and the unique glass forms.
- Layer with Linens: A contrasting table runner or an interesting texture underneath can make the terrariums pop. If your terrarium is open, you can even drape a delicate lace runner partially into the vessel for a romantic touch.
- Varying Heights: Don’t just place them flat on the table. Use small, elegant risers, a stack of vintage books, or even small wooden crates to create different levels. This adds depth and visual interest to your tablescapes, guiding your guests’ eyes around the table more dynamically.
- Minimalist Florals: If you still love flowers, consider small, delicate floral accents around the terrarium, rather than as the main centerpiece. Think single blooms in bud vases or scattered petals.
Here’s a pretty clever idea: use your terrariums to subtly tell your love story at each table. For example, Table 1 could have a terrarium with elements representing where you first met. Table 5 might contain tiny symbols of your favorite shared hobby. You could even include a small, elegant card at each table explaining the significance of that particular terrarium’s elements. It’s a personal touch that truly engages your guests and gives them something unique to discover.
Now for the elephant in the room when it comes to any DIY wedding decor: The Transport Challenge. Getting your delicate creations to the venue safely is paramount. Trust me, the last thing you want is a shattered dream (or terrarium!) on your wedding day.
- Individual Boxes: The best method is to pack each terrarium securely in its own sturdy box, perhaps with a little cushioning like tissue paper or crinkled newspaper. Ensure there’s no room for it to shift.
- Temperature Control: Terrariums are sensitive to extreme temperatures. If it’s a hot day, ensure they are transported in an air-conditioned vehicle. Avoid leaving them in a hot car for any extended period, as this can cause rapid condensation or even cook your plants.
- Last-Minute Assembly: If your design allows, consider transporting the vessels and plants separately and doing a quick assembly at the venue. This is particularly good for very fragile designs or open terrariums where elements might shift. Delegate this to a trusted bridesmaid, groomsman, or a day-of coordinator. Always have a small kit with extra soil, a spray bottle, and tweezers on hand for any last-minute touch-ups.
By planning these logistics ahead of time, you’ll reduce stress and ensure your beautiful creations arrive at your reception looking as stunning as you envisioned.
FAQs: Your Top Terrarium Table Number Questions Answered
You’ve got questions about these living centerpieces, and I’ve got answers! Let’s tackle some of the most common queries I hear about DIY terrarium table numbers.
How far in advance can I make them? This is a fantastic question and depends on the type of terrarium. For closed terrariums (which aren’t common for table numbers due to numbering issues, but good to know), they can be made weeks or even months in advance as they are self-sustaining. For open terrariums or those with easily accessible openings (most common for table numbers), I recommend making them 1-2 weeks before your wedding. This gives the plants time to settle, allows you to observe their health, and leaves time for any minor adjustments. Any earlier and you risk plants growing too much or needing more maintenance than you want right before your big day. Any later and you’ll add unnecessary stress to your final week.
What plants are best for terrariums? The key here is small, slow-growing, and humidity-loving (for closed) or drought-tolerant (for open).
- For open terrariums (most suitable for table numbers): Succulents (e.g., Echeveria, Haworthia), small cacti, and air plants (Tillandsia) are fantastic choices. They require minimal watering and are very forgiving.
- For closed terrariums (if you’re going for a sealed look without numbers inside): Small ferns (e.g., Maidenhair Fern, Button Fern), Fittonia (nerve plant), or small mosses thrive in humid environments.
No matter your choice, ensure the plants are healthy and free from pests before adding them to your terrarium. Check out this quick guide:
Can terrariums survive without sunlight? Not really. While they don’t need direct sunlight (which can actually scorch plants inside a glass vessel), they do need indirect light. Think of a bright room, away from a window that gets harsh afternoon sun. For your wedding day, they’ll be fine for a few hours in a reception venue, but for longer-term display, ensure they get adequate ambient light.
How do I keep them looking fresh?
- Watering: This is the most crucial part! For succulents and air plants in open terrariums, mist lightly every week or two, or when the soil feels completely dry. For mosses and ferns, a bit more humidity might be needed. The key is to never let water pool at the bottom.
- Pruning: If a plant starts to outgrow its space, gently prune it back.
- Pest Check: Rarely an issue, but inspect your plants when you get them.
- Ventilation (for open terrariums): Ensure they have good air circulation.
Can these double as guest favors? Absolutely, and this is one of the most brilliant aspects of DIY terrarium table numbers! After the wedding, simply remove the number (if it’s a temporary insert) or leave it in as a memento, and encourage guests to take them home. Provide small care instructions cards next to each one, detailing light and water needs for their specific plant. It’s a sustainable, memorable, and beautiful way to thank your loved ones for celebrating with you. Plus, it significantly cuts down on waste compared to traditional floral arrangements that often end up in the bin. Talk about a win-win!
